From the depths of L.A.'s crime ridden streets to the heights of conversations with God, Richard Berry Whitaker's journey as a member of the LAPD and a devoted member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints will invite you to witness his life, work, growth, challenges, grief, and ultimate triumph and faith in a living, loving God and His Son, Jesus Christ. You will witness Whitaker's close brushes with death time and again, where, like a cat with nine lives, he survives even more. You will feel the whisperings of Spirit as he is saved from death's cold fingers while angels protect him in tangible embraces. You will laugh one moment, read breathlessly the next and end your reading time wiping tears of joy or comfort or bittersweet sorrow. When the last page is turned and your last tissue tossed, you will know you have walked with the angels who watched over a man who loves God, family and country, and who defied the bounds of mortality because of the warriors from the other side who stood guard to assist him in completing his mortal ministry and mission. Your time will be well spent in the pages of this book, and your faith strengthened in a God who hears and answers prayers.

I could hardly wait to obtain this new book of Richard Whitaker's. It was well worth the long wait. This book held my every attention, which means I could not put it down. I knew it would be good and it topped his first book Conflict In Blue Behind The Badge. Taking the story of his life from a small boy to the Present; including the many adventures with danger, but filled with the knowledge of " The Spirit" protecting and guiding his way. Nice short stories filled with some pain at times, but always insightful. A strong cop, but a gentle and loving missionary. This book is uplifting and confirms the believe that, no matter how we grow up, what job we may have or where our life may take us...we have " The Spirit " and angels watching over us always. That's a FACT.Product details

A Remarkable Journey Richard Berry Whitaker 9781478271048 Books Reviews
Having been in law enforcement for several years, many years ago, I was really interested in and drawn to Richard's experiences. But, the most powerful part of the book for me was about half was through when he transitioned to a different part of his life and related his spiritual experiences as a member of the LDS Church. If you have an ounce of spirituality within your soul, this will counter sink your beliefs. I found his book very moving for me and several times brought me to tears, as I could relate on so many levels with Richard. A must read!!
Knowing Richard only recently, yet being aware of his faith and continuing service and leadership, you may not ever find a better person to know and call friend. While not of the same faith community, the author shows readers by example and witness how individuals can endure many, many challenges in his mortality and still find ways to serve his family and his faith community -- and reach out to others not yet baptized into the church. The book reads easily and shares intimate insights about at least some of his many, many and varied types of service -- from LA street cop in South Central -- all the way to the many and various facets of his mission for God.
My future wife gave me a copy of “A Remarkable Journey”, telling me it had been written by her home teacher in her new LDS ward. Being a strong Baptist, I felt unmotivated to read the life story of this unknown Mormon man. A year passed, we got married, I moved across the country and I got to know the Whitakers. One day, as I prepared for a business trip across the country, the Holy Spirit spoke to me. “Bring the book on the trip”, I heard clearly. I obeyed.
Never have I had a flight seem to move that quickly! Nearly 500 pages of gripping story was more than I could finish in one flight, but every night in the hotel room I read more. It would have been smarter save it for the flight home, but I simply could not wait that long.
A literary purist could criticize the organization. This book is more like a series of anecdotes than it is a biography. Accordingly, the author focuses on telling those stories rather than putting them in sequence. Chapters are not numbered. Chapters are grouped under 16 subdivisions which I will call “sections” for convenience. The uneven organization might be jarring to some, but I didn’t find it so. That’s about the only quibble I have with this book.
The first section covers “The Early Years”. These include anecdotes about his childhood and his early years with his wife. The second section “A Street Soldier” presents stories about his career as a street cop. These sections cover about 40% of the book. The remaining material centers on various facets of his life in the LDS church, both in the US and in his South American mission work. There are no fewer than 14 sections on his LDS ministry ranging from 1 to 21 chapters.
It is not surprising that street cop Whitaker found himself in plenty of hair-raising situations. That young Richard Whitaker did is perhaps a little more surprising, but hey, boys will be boys and I am sure he was all boy! Anyone who likes action stories will find a lot to like in the first two parts of the book. But what to make of the remaining 60%? Why should a non-Mormon be interested? For that matter, why did the Holy Spirit prompt me to pick up the book?
Being married to a Mormon, it makes sense for me to be interested in knowing more about how the LDS church works, as our spiritual relationship is the foundation of our marriage and the differences are fertile ground for Satan to attack us. But I found the experiences of the Whitakers fascinating in their own right. The spiritual battles they fought are common to all Christians. You cannot help but see God’s hand and the Holy Spirit’s presence in their lives. Most Protestants think of Mormons as non-Christian, a point this Baptist will readily argue against. The experiences found in this book only cemented my belief that the Mormons are indeed my brothers and sisters in Christ. And that, dear reader, is why any Christians of any flavor should read this book.
The final chapter is titled “Whitakerisms”, and it contains four pages of one liners, many of which I’ve heard him utter. My favorite, which I have reminded myself often when dealing with argumentative people trying to get me to do something, is “NO is a complete sentence”. Remember that, but when deciding whether to buy this book, say YES. It is as inspiring as it is entertaining.
I loved reading every bit of this book and found it hard not to jump ahead at times to see the outcome! So many adventures, so many experiences with the majestic and the Spirit. From the boyhood adventures to the hard-nosed officer to the disciple of the Lord-a great book and I consider it an honor to be the first to leave a review!
I couldn't put this one down!
If you are fortunate enough to get your hands on this book, you will consider yourself "lucky" indeed.
A perfect blend of pace, suspense, intrigue, and insight. Life experiences from a remarkable man, on a remarkable journey. A sermon of sermons!
I will let the 5 stars say the rest....
This second book by Richard Berry Whitaker tells of his own "remarkable journey" through his life as an officer in the police department of one of the nation's largest cities, through his years serving in various offices in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Mormons), both at home and in countries around the world. He has had some remarkable experiences, in both life saving and life affirming ways, including the 'unheard warnings and promptings' that saved his own life in the dangerous streets of L.A.~~and the ways in which he profoundly affected the lives of those with whom he worked within his church callings.
I would recommend this book to any who love stories that will make you laugh, and then cry in the same pages.
Looking for the next one !
